Pizza Margherita

pizza margherita

What's your favorite pizza? I don't like heavy, zillion-topping pizzas. I like them very simple with few ingredients. I think it's because I like bread so much, and really what's pizza other than bread flattened out with some stuff on top. One of my favorites is pizza margherita. It's perfect in summer when your tomatoes are flourishing (well, if I grew tomatoes, I bet they'd be flourishing) and your basil is flourishing (yay, mine is!)

Pizza margherita is so simple, it really doesn't even need a recipe. You take your pizza dough, top it with extra virgin olive oil, sliced tomatoes, and fresh mozzarella cheese. Bake in the hottest oven you can find, for about 10 minutes. Sprinkle fresh chopped basil on top, while it's still warm. Eat.

The only thing I do differently is that I usually heat up about 1/4 cup olive oil, with a clove or two of minced garlic, and that is what I use to brush over the pizza before adding the tomatoes and cheese. Yum.

I've seen a couple of people review this. It's a variation of "white pizza", which I never saw before I got here, but which I love, because I don't like sauce. Did you make your own crust? How's your finger holding up, and how's the school year starting off?

This is my favorite pizza becuase you don't end up with all the grease! Love this and the crust looks great too. Did you make that?

My favorite is fresh tomatoes and fresh basil, the rest of the family likes canadian bacon and pineapple.
I guess I am a purist when it comes to pizza!

This sounds terrific! I like what you did with the olive oil. I've not seen that done before, and I bet it was great with the garlic. I bet this would taste great on focaccia, as well as with plain ol' regular mozzarella sliced in rounds. YUM!

Hope that both your finger and your work were better today.

I sometimes mix roasted garlic with olive oil before I brush it over the dough. This is one of my favorite pizzas. If only I had planted basil this year...

for me, the crust makes the pizza. if the crust stinks, i won't eat it, no matter how awesome the toppings are. this particular pizza looks practically perfect. :)

Pam, I do it a tiny bit differently - I spread the dough with homemade tomato sauce, then add the cheese and basil, as you described it. YUM!

I agree, it is the best pizza.

It's the fresh basil. I'm addicted to fresh basil this summer.

Yup, that's my favorite... Although, I will admit, sometimes I scatter a slice or two of shredded, paper thin Prosciutto over the top... Not too much, tho
