I am of the belief that anytime you have fruit for dessert it's healthy. I mean, your supposed to eat so many servings of fruit a day, right? So, apple pie, pineapple upside down cake, strawberry shortcake, all healthy. Who's with me on this?
The problem is my baking skills. Me and pie crusts might as well be on different planets. My cakes are only slightly better than my pies. For me it's ice cream, and really most of the time, I can't even be bothered making a custard (though I do love the creamy results), so it's sorbets. Nothing easier.
It doesn't even really take a recipe, you make a simple syrup, add your fruit, usually some lemon or lime juice, and some alcohol, and call it a day. But for proper proportions, I called on Perfect Scoop: Ice Creams, Sorbets, Granitas, and Sweet Accompaniments
Mango Sorbet
adapted from the genius of David Lebovitz
2 large, ripe mangoes
2/3 cup sugar
2/3 cup water
4 teaspoons fresh squeezed lime juice
1 tablespoon dark rum, plus more to taste (I used 2)
pinch of salt
Peel the mangoes and cut into chunks. Place the mangoes and the rest of the ingredients in a blender. Squeeze the mango pits over the blender to try and get as much juice out of the flesh as possible. Puree until smooth. Taste and add more lime juice or rum. Chill thoroughly and the process in your ice cream maker per it's directions.

Yes, absolutely fruit and vegetables for dessert. Came across a winter squash the other day that was so sweet it could have been pie without any added other sugar. Mango sorbet looks wonderful. Wish I could hire you to take food pictures for me!
Amen, Sister! Fruit desserts are healthy. Let's see...your mango sorbet, apple pie, pear tarts, peach cobbler...Great item!
Mmm! I bet this was so incredible with the mango and dark rum! I'll take some for my after breakfast dessert! :D
Very easy. Can it work for other fruit too?
Sorbet with two tablespoons of rum sounds like the sorbet for me. :-)(hiccup!)
yes, i'm definitely with ya. hallelujah and amen. i can't say that the flavor of mango thrills me, but this would be undoubtedly refreshing. and it's a looker. so there's that.
Nice photo, refreshing dessert! Contemplating a rhubarb-raspberry crisp as my next dessert...
I'm in full agreement, and this sounds so easy. I've never made sorbet, but there's a first time for everything.
This sorbet looks beautiful and sounds so refreshing and delicious. I really want to try this recipe.
This is the deal. Pie crusts smell your fear, kind of like horses. You have to go in and mix that flour like it's nobody's business...kind of like when you get on a horse...NO fear. However, I would never turn down ice cream of any sort!
The wonderful thing about sorbet is that your ice-cream maker does the work for you.
Voila, great dessert for about 15 minutes (if that) worth of effort.
Definitely healthy. And delicious...I checked this book out from the library towards the end of summer and loved it!!
Fruit desserts totally qualify as breakfast! Part of leading a healthy lifestyle, right ;) I love Dave Lebowitz's Perfect Scoop. Almost the entire book is on google book reader, but I still want to buy it just to add to my collection. He is a genius! Love the pic, so pretty!
That is one beautiful photo - and I bet the sorbet was delicious!
I love the goblets!
As this is health food.. I had better have two scoops! :)
I feel like even if you couldn't plug in your mixer or keep things frozen, looking at the pictures might just be enough. And at that point you are probably hallucinating so you could maybe manage to convince yourself that you were in fact making and eating sorbet/ice cream. Mango is definitely my favorite fruit and so this sorbet looks awesome. Another one to bookmark for when I finally get an ice cream maker!
My husband is a huge mango fan, and somewhere in the pantry we have an ice cream machine. This recipe might be just the thing to bring ice cream machine and ice cream lover together again.
I don't think mango can do no wrong. As a sorbet it's sublime.
