Mad Housewife

Mad Housewife Chardonnay, 2008, California, $6.99.  Another wine bought for the label.  I drive my husband crazy, I won’t even look at the boringly labeled wines.  They say:  Flavors of melon, pear and Fuji apple abound. Hints of cinnamon, light toasty oak, and a creamy finish.  We say:  peachy, melony, medium body.  Good.  Buy again:  Yes, for the price.

Tierra de Luna

Tierra de Luna, Torrontes-Chardonnay, 2008, Argentina, $8.99.  We say: bright, lively, hint of pineapple.  Very nice!  Buy again:  definitely.

Bohemian Highway

Bohemian Highway Chardonnay, California, 2008, $4.00. They say:  lightly oaked, fruit driven with enticing pear and apple flavors and a touch of refreshing citrus.  We say:  Yes!!!  They described it perfectly.  Excellent!  Buy again:  definitely yes….and you know what?  We did.  We bought several bottles.  Some people stock their wine cellars with expensive, rare vintages, we stock ours (and again by wine cellar, I mean old Peaches Records crates at the bottom of the basement stairs) with $4.00 gems like this.

Thanks for the good reviews – we’ll have to try them. I’m a great believer in you like what you like, not what someone else says is good or costs alot.

Speaking of buying wine for a label, at Valentine’s day weekend, I had to borrow some wine from a neighbor and she just gave me the bottle. The brand was “Ménage à Trois”.

The next time I saw her, I couldn’t resist saying, “Oh and Jana, I can’t thank you enough for that Ménage à Trois last month!”

    We were cracking up.

I’ve been meaning to ask (sorry if you’ve already mentioned this): where do you buy your wines? Do you go to a wine shop, grocery store, or hit the local Target. The hint of pineapple sounds really intriguing to me, especially with summer on the way. Love the label on that last one!

If I saw the Mad Housewife in my co-op, I’d buy it in a second.

A $4 wine I’ve been enjoying lately is El Gato Negro. I prefer the chardonnay. A good cheap wine is a very important discovery.

I often times buy the wine buy the labels too. I love that first one with the mad housewife. I’ll be on the lookout for the Bohemian label. That is a great price.

I’ve seen the Bohemian Highway. Will have to grab a bottle next visit.

Monique, Canadian liquor stores don’t carry wines from the U.S.? I saw Canadian ice wine recently, but the price tag was a little too steep for me.

Oooh, I think I’ll take a little ride on the Bohemian Highway. Had my husband read this, since he’s the white wine drinker. I love the funny names and labels, but I buy by the $– off labels, too. If it’s $4 to $9 off and that gets it under $10, I buy in a hurry so that I can rush back and buy more before the sale ends.

I love the labels…wish I could get them off. My brother used to request them from the wine companies, but that seems like so much trouble!

We had a red, I think Cab, Bohemian. I thought it was just fine for that price tag. We have about 300 bottles in our “wine cellar” and like you it’s under the stairwell in the basement. We went to a wine festival last year where 300 was considered tiny. Most folks had 3,000, can you imagine?
