I was watering my azalea's when this big guy came lumbering out from the depths of the bush. Notice the water dripping off his elbows (do bugs have elbows?)!
I wish I knew we had these this year. Our fennel is gone as is our parsley... overrun with black swallowtail caterpillars. The Monarchs are working on the last of my milkweed as well. I think this fellow could help a little with this and other critters as the ladybugs seem to have deserted me, even though the milkweed aphids run rampant.
I hope he is praying for Fall to hurry up and get here. I always considered them as a sort of garden God. I guess it is probably an old wives tale or something. They are supposed to be good luck.
I wouldn't scream and run, I'd try to steal him out from under your nose (not really, but I'd like to). I wish he was in my garden eating all my garden pests.

Did you scream? I would have screamed.
Maybe a squeal? I probably would have squealed a bit... ;-)

Absolutely fabulous photo! Aren't they amazing (from a distance of course). LOL
That bug has elbows.
Well, it would appear that this bug has elbows. I would have screamed and run instead of reaching for the camera.

What a great catch! Elbows for sure. ;)
It is rather ugly! I have never seen a praying mantis. You must carry your camera around your neck!!
It sure looks like they do.
Those bugs fascinate and scare me.
