Garden Tuesday ~Squirrels~

Squirrel at bird feeder

When you decide to feed the little birdies in your yard, you also end up feeding the squirrels.

This little guy was quite brazen.  He didn’t even acknowledge me as I was walking up to him, clicking away with my camera.

I thought he was fearless, but as I looked at the photos later, I saw a pale blue spot in the center of the eye that was facing me.  I’m afraid that he might be blind in one eye, which is not a good thing with all the cats around here.

But then he did see me!

He quickly grabbed some more.

Even reaching up for one last handful!

Before scampering back up out elaborate systems of hooks.

We have since given up on this bird feeder and gone back to our tried and true Brome 1024 Squirrel Buster Plus Wild Bird Feeder with Cardinal Perch Ring and yes, it may seem expensive, but so is all the bird seed that the squirrels pillage!  This is the only bird feeder that keeps squirrels out.  And, it’s not that I don’t like the squirrels, but they have zillions of hickory trees in our yard and have plenty to eat!

How about you, how does your garden look this week?

Please join me for Garden Tuesday.

the squirrels are so greedy!

Wouldn't you think he'd have slipped working his way up (and down) on the metal hooks? Quite enterprising.

You gotta go to the link for the Brome Feeder and watch the video. Kind of entertaining. AND the thing is dishwasher safe! I just might buy one! I'm tired of chasing squirrels.

It's a lot cuter in someone else's yard than it is in your own. Great pictures!

I looked out the window yesterday and there was one squirrel on our feeder, two under the feeder, and a fourth one--I promise this is true--kicked back in a nearby lounge chair under the oak tree. I was so stunned I neglected to reach for the camera.

You really got some good shots of that pesky squirrel! Good job. We had a squirrel problem at our old place (in the country) after our dog passed away. He kept many critters at bay.

i have never had squirrels once at my feeders, i so rarely see them,i think country living makes life to risky for them with all the predators. i did lose my telephone service for a week, the phone company finally figured out the squirrels had put nuts in the thing and shorted out the wires way up in the sky. you want to go bankrupt try feeding finches, i swear my seed is the cost is like a mortgage payment!

Squirrels are bold. Best to stick to feeding birdies, since they have so many fewer choices than the squirrels do.

Cheeky little things, arent they. I have a love/hate relationship with them.

I have also found that an expensive feeder is the way to go if one is to really try and keep the squirrels out. You are correct, it is not that they are so bad, but they don't need it in he same way the birds do and they chase the birds away!

Squirrels are the most persistent animals on earth. I haven't done a scientific study, but I'm sticking to it.

The ONLY squirrel deflector that works that I know of is the one that's a shallow cone shape, like a coolie hat. If the feeder is far enough from a tree to prevent jumping from above, there is NO way they can go beyond it. We have one under a feeder on a pole, and the squirrels have to be content with taking the seeds that fall to the ground, of which there are plenty, so we don't feel too guilty in preventing them from getting to the feeder. Good luck!
