Tom Sherbourne is a lighthouse keeper on Janus Rock. A lonely desolate place, isolation broken occasionally with the arrival of a supply boat. Amidst all odds, Tom manages to meet and fall in love with Isabel during some of his furloughs. He brings her back with him to Janus Rock.
It is a lovely life that is marred by two miscarriages and one stillbirth. So, when boat washes ashore with a dead man inside it and a very alive baby, Isabel scoops up the baby. She pleads with Tom to let her keep the baby. Tom reluctantly agrees, though it eats at him. They name her Lucy and she fills their lives with joy.
But Tom can not get the real grieving mother out of his mind. And when they see her on a visit into town, he tries to reassure her. In doing so, he risks losing Lucy and Isabel.
The Light Between Oceans: A Novel is a wonderful book. it held my interest from beginning to end. I occasionally got angry at Tom – at all his goodness, and I worried about Isabel. It’s a love story, almost a mystery, and it works it’s way into your heart and stays with you long after you finish.
