This delicious pasta is sure to become a favorite recipe using smoked trout! So flavorful!
Have you walked by those little packages of smoked trout and smoked salmon at your grocery store? They are usually over by the bacon and other packaged meats.
I had already used a package of smoked salmon to make this delicious Smoked Salmon Salad, so I was eager to try the smoked trout!
These packets may look expensive at first glance, but they pack so much flavor in that one piece of fish, it’s amazing! This simple pasta with smoked trout recipe from an old Donna Hay magazine is a winner!
Ingredients.
- Fettucine - linguine would also work. Or just use your favorite pasta shape!
- Sugar snap peas - I use fresh if I can find it, otherwise frozen work great.
- Smoked trout - you can use anywhere from 4 ounces to 8 ounces, whatever size you can fine will work. Obviously the more you have the better it is. You can also substitute smoked salmon.
- Lemon - try to find organic since you will be using the zest.
- Olive oil.
- Sour cream - keeps it creamy and helps the flavors from the trout coat every strand of pasta.
Instructions.
You can cut the snap peas in half or leave whole.
Bring a large pot of water to a boil and salt generously. Add the pasta and cook according to the directions. When there is about 2-3 minutes left in the cooking time, add the snap peas.
While the pasta is cooking, zest and juice one lemon. It is easier if you zest the lemon first and then juice it. Add to a small bowl. Whisk in the olive oil and the sour cream.
Drain the pasta and snap peas and add them to a large bowl. Flake the smoked trout over the pasta and add the lemon dressing. Toss and season with salt and pepper to taste.
One smoked trout has enough flavor to lend every bite a nice smokey flavor. The trout sort of falls apart and coats each piece of pasta.
The snap peas had just the right amount of … well …snap to the dish. It is light and flavorful and the perfect food to offset some of your heavy holiday eating! Not to forget – it is such an easy recipe! It comes together in the time it takes you to cook the pasta!

This is the kind of pasta dish I love, and I often buy smoked salmon at the supermarket. Unfortunately here we can't buy trout here - if you want trout in NZ you have to go out and catch it yourself, which is not quite so convenient as just plucking it off the shelf!!

These look delicious! I have not seen smoked trout before and the smoked salmon are pretty pricey!
Cooking them in a pasta dish sounds good to me!
Happy New Year!

Yes, I always walk by those packages of smoked fish thinking they are far too expensive to serve the entire family. Love the idea of using then in a pasta dish.

I love both smoked trout and salmon--although for some reason I often end up eating my trout with white beans. 😉 It looks fabulous with the pasta and those crisp peas--yum! Hope you had lovely holidays.

Oh yes, that smoked salmon is very good but I never thought to pair with pasta - until you posted this! Great choice for party time.

I can't tell you how many times I have picked up the smoked trout and put it back down, Pam. I usually end up with the Salmon too. Not anymore, I will definitely be giving it a try. Trout is big around here and it's about time I get with the program:) I'm not sure about trying it on top of the pasta but hey once can't hurt! Who knows, we may like it too!!! Thanks for sharing, Pam and thanks for that note on your Trader Joe's or lack of, too:)

I have noticed smoked salmon, but not trout. I will have to look harder, I think it would be tasty.

I always think of smoked trout as similar to anchovies or smoked salmon...a little bit goes a long way!
