A few photos of our neighbor's sunflowers for Garden Tuesday.
Our house was built in 1984. What I love about our subdivision is that they didn't clear out all the trees. There are small pockets of wooded areas and many homes have large, mature trees in their front yards. Out house is one of the lucky ones, we have a small wooded area in our backyard and during the summer, it makes it look like we live out in the woods, as you can only catch glimpses of the homes behind us. In the winter, we loose the leaf coverage, but it's still nice.
My point of this is that 20 years ago when we bought our home, we had lots of sunlight. We had trees, but they were small. Now they are all large and practically make a canopy over our backyard. My herb garden eeks out the tiniest bit of light. Our berry bushes are struggling and about the only thing flourishing are our shade loving plants.
The hickory tree in our front yard has easily doubled in size and is turning what was once an almost full sun bed into a few hours of sun in the late afternoon bed! We tried to grow some sunflowers this year, but we just don't have a sunny enough place. They got long and leggy and eventually gave up.
The previous owners of our neighbor's house cut down most of their trees. They are awash in sunlight. Luckily I can walk over and get my sunflower photography fix. They are so unique and beautiful. I love them!

This sounds familiar...
Trees are very valuable, but sometimes thinning is needed. But forest cleared is never good!
Nice Sunflowers next door 😉 I had no one this year. Guess why?
