Affogato is so Easy!
I feel like I have been living under a rock. Apparently there was this simply amazing and oh so simple dessert floating around that I had no idea even existed. Affogato, which means drowned is just that - it is vanilla ice cream or gelato that you drown in espresso. I was reading A Suitcase and Spatula, when I stumbled upon affogato! How could there be something so simple and so wonderful and I had never had it. I love espresso. I love vanilla ice cream. I love dark chocolate. I love desserts that come together in literally a matter of minutes. The hardest part of this dessert is making the espresso - and if I must confess I just used really, really strong coffee.

Since I adore homemade liqueurs, I just so happened to have some homemade coffee liqueur. Perfect to turn this into an even more adult dessert. I have to say that this was the easiest dessert that I have ever made and quite possibly one of my favorites. The espresso, slowly melts the ice cream (anyone else remember being a child and stirring your bowl of ice cream until you had ice cream soup?). The dark chocolate shavings add a little texture and a bitter sweet component. Heaven.

It's too late to whip up one of these now but believe me, I'll be making extra strong coffee before dessert on Easter!
Thanks for sharing, Pam and for the welcome reminder:) (yes, I remember squishing up my ice cream, always chocolate:)

I'm glad I'm not the only one who pays a great deal of attention to the food in the books I read. Looks like a terrific dessert, even if it is just a fancy name for a grown-up's ice cream sundae (which is a perfect dessert in most people's eyes, anyway).
