    Homemade Pita Chips

You may be wondering why you should make your own homemade pita chips when you can just go to the store and buy a bag.

Several reasons, actually.  Homemade chips taste better!  You can make this with whatever seasonings you would like!  You can make them healthier by using grain free or whole grain, whatever kind of pita fits your diet and lifestyle.  Last, but not least, they are so easy, why wouldn't you make your own?!

So, sit back and let me show you how easy it is to make these!

Top down photo showing the ingredients needed to make homemade pita chips.

Ingredients to Make Spicy Pita Chips.

Once you start making your own pita chips regularly, you can play with spices and figure out which you like best.  To make today's spicy pita chips you need the following ingredients:

Pita Bread - I used whole wheat, there are many options available.

Olive Oil - I used extra virgin olive oil.

Melted Butter - because butter makes everything better.

Red Pepper Flakes - just the right amount of heat.

Salt - I used kosher salt, you can use your favorite, just don't use table salt.

Black Pepper - adds even more spice and heat.

Parsley - for a little brightness.

Garlic - I feel the same way about garlic that I do about butter (see above.)

Chili Powder - I used ancho chili powder, you can use whichever kind you like.

Over head shot of pita chips with spicy ingredients being brushed on them.

How to Make Easy Homemade Pita Chips

    Begin by preheating your oven.

Gather your ingredients and mince the parsley and garlic, melt the butter and combine all of the ingredients (except for the salt) in a small bowl.

You need to decide if you want your pita chips to have two layers or be a single layer.  For this recipe we use a single layer, so using a pair of kitchen shear, I cut around the outside edge, so that it opens up like two flat plates.  Then I cut each flat disk into fourths.  So, one pita will create 8 pita chips.  If you want your pita chips thicker with two layers, just cut the pita bread into fourths, to make 4 pita chips.

Brush each chip with the spicy mix.   Sprinkle with the salt.  Bake for about 10-12 minutes.

What to Eat With Pita Chips

Okay, so now you've made these delicious chips and you're wondering what to do with them!

We love to serve them with salads like this Mediterranean Chicken Salad or this Smoked Salmon Salad and this Kale Greek Salad.

They are also good with dips like Roasted Beet Hummus or Easy Homemade Hummus or our favorite Giada's Everyday Caponata.

They are great on appetizer or snack tray with some marinated olives and we like to just fill a bowl up with them and serve with a cold beer or a favorite cocktail.

If you're looking for even more dips to serve with your pitas, you'll find some good ones on my Snack and Appetizers Board on Pinterest.

This is such a great idea! They want an arm and a leg for store bought pita chips and making your own, you can control the spices and salt! Brilliant!
