Ice Cream Socials. Love them. What’s not to love? There’s ice cream and then there’s socializing. Well, actually I’m not much of a socializer. Though I have declared this the summer of my socializing and I’m trying to do more. You know, go to events and parties and actually talk to people.
So, when I saw the Ice Cream Social at Kitchen Bouquet, I thought, “hey, I did declare this the summer of my socializing!” What better way to meet my goal. The only problem was that I had already made ice cream, and while it was delightful, it was actually a plain jane vanilla frozen yogurt. Good, but not too exciting. But what if I dressed it up a bit? Put it in it’s Sunday best, perfect for socializing.
So, I did. It’s Sunday best was the Whiskey Caramel Sauce from The Perfect Scoop: Ice Creams, Sorbets, Granitas, and Sweet Accompanimentsby David Lebovitz. OMG. This was amazing! It totally turned my vanilla frozen yogurt into a sensual, sweet, creamy treat.
Rum Caramel Sauce
- 1 cup sugar
- 1 cup water
- 1 Tablespoon whiskey
In a large heavy-bottomed sauce pan, spread the sugar in an even layer. Pour 1/2 cup the water over it. Heat the sugar, without stirring, over medium heat until it begins to bubble and dissolve.
Once the sugar begins to smoke and turn a deep amber color, remove it from the heat and add the rest of the water. Step back because it may splatter and steam! Once the steam subsides, whisk it until smooth (wear an oven mitt to protect your hand from hot splatters and steam).
Stir in the whiskey, and let it cool to room temperature.
It can be stored in the fridge for a month and heated gently in the microwave before serving.
What a perfectly delightful sauce to bring to an Ice Cream Social, so come join in and see what every one else has brought!
