If you have a shady to partial shady area in your garden, you really need to plant some columbine. It is so soft and delicate, I love it. It has jaunty flowers that dangle like bells atop tall slender stems. It blooms right now, so I guess you would call that late spring or early summer. It is one of my favorite shade loving perennials.
It's low cluster of almost clover like looking leaves are the first to pop up at soon as it starts warming up. They are a soft grey green and very pretty in their own right. Soon, tall slender stems pop up and the flower heads open. When they finish blooming, they have longish seed pods. They freely reseed all over my garden. I believe that we started out with just two plants and now have them practically filling a corner.
In the above photo, you can see more of it's leaves. You can also see that it is perfectly capable of muscling it's way through some wild ginger and ferns.
I did a few soft and hazy photos, just because I love how delicate the columbine flowers are. I hope I've convinced you that if you have a need for some shade loving perennials and you love flowers, columbine should be in your garden!

I love Columbine, but mine get buried under too many leaves from the tree....Gorgeous shots!
