Bubblegum Rhododendron - gorgeous pink flowers!

Partial Sun to Shade Flowering Shrub

We have an area in the back of our yard that is kind of wooded.  There are lots of trees, but there are also open areas.  We've been wanting to add some color, but still have it look natural.   We were looking for a partial sun shade loving flowering shrub and we have found one we love, in this Bubblegum Rhododendron!

    Large Pink Blossoms

We planted the Bubblegum Rhododendron last year.  It just had a few blooms on it, we had no idea it was going to be so gorgeous.  Each blossom is almost 4 inches across.  It blooms in early spring and the blossoms lasted for a couple of weeks.

In this last photo you can see how beautiful it looks in the woody setting.  You can also see that it is not heavily wooded.  The tag with the rhododendron said that it needed 3-6 hours of sunlight.  It received plenty of sun in the spring before all of the trees came to leaf, and will receive less as the summer goes on.

This rhododendron is hardy in zones 5-7 making it perfect for our Tennessee garden.  Rhododendrons are so easy care, you don't need to prune them, though you can pinch back the faded flowers to encourage blooming next year.  We don't plan on shaping this one at all, it is a moderate grower getting about 3-4 feet tall and wide.

If you are interested in learning more about rhododendrons, this book, Rhododendrons:  An Illustrated Guide looks pretty good. I love the colors in this Golden Touch Rhododendron and this Cat Album White Rhododendron!
