Feeding the birds is big at our house. We have some fancy schmancy feeder from Wild Bird's Unlimited that does a fantastic job of keeping the squirrels and the raccoons away. If you feed the birds, you know that one of the things they love is sunflower seeds. We love watching the little birds dive in, grab a seed, and then perch on a branch as they peck it open with their beaks. The cardinals, on the other hand, like to just hang out, grabbing a seed and just cracking it open easily with their beaks. I think they are showing off to those little birds that have to do it the hard way.
They also apparently like grass seed because we have a lot of that growing under the feeder. This year Mr. Sidewalk Shoes was working on the bed that the bird feeder is in and turned over the soil a bit. We aren't sure if that's what did it, but now we have these big tall plants coming up that we figured out are sunflowers! The bed isn't all that sunny so I don't know how well they'll do, but it's exciting watching them grow!

Thanks for having this garden party. That is a great closeup of the sunflower. Sorry my images are upside down. I don't know why.

Great detail in your photos, Pam.
Funny about the sunflowers....never had that happen under my bird feeders!

We haven't either! We think it's because he turned over the soil, maybe buried the seeds just the right amount?
