The Virtues of Oxygen is such an interesting book. In one way it’s just a nice piece of literature focusing on family and friends in one small town, Bertram Corners. A small town deadened by a changing world. A world filled with online retailers instead of quaint storefronts off of Main Street.
But it is elevated by it’s main character, Vivian. Vivian is not your average character, she is in an iron lung. She has been in the iron lung since she was 5 years old and she is now sixty three. She has spent 57 years of her life in the iron lung. She can not be left alone, someone must be with her at all times. The town supports her with a list of volunteers who sit with her in shifts. Talking with the people as they do their shifts, she knows more about the town and the people in it, than anyone else.
This is a wonderful heart felt story. It is about what people do to survive, what kind of sacrifices they make. It’s about friendships and people supporting people.

I always enjoy your book suggestions so I will read this one always. Although I see you enjoyed Goldfinch-I could not finish that one.

I love that the town takes care of Vivian like that. It is one of the wonderful things about small-town life in my opinion.
Thanks for being a part of the tour!
