It has been a little while since I’ve read a Charlaine Harris. I didn’t even know that she had started a new series. I have read and enjoyed most of the True Blood books.
Day Shift takes place in Midnight, Texas. The story revolves around Manfred, the local psychic. Manfred is having a reading with his client Rachel when she dies. This is bad news for Manfred, especially when Rachel’s son Lewis says that she had her jewelry with her in her purse, and now it’s missing and Manfred stole it. Rachel, however had told Manfred that she was afraid of her son, and she had hid her jewelry. So, all Manfred has to do is find her jewelry and prove he didn’t steal it.
The town is also all aflutter because someone has purchased a run down hotel in town and is fixing it up to turn it into an old folks home/hotel. Why would anyone want to open up business like that in sleepy, rundown Midnight, Texas?
Day Shift is filled with the same type of charming, quirky characters that Charlaine Harris is known for. As you read, you discover what makes each one a little special, a little unique, and even a little dangerous. There is even a mention of Sookie from Bon Temps.
Apparently this is the second book in the series. It can easily be read as a standalone (I did), but there are some references to instances that most likely occurred in the first book. I liked this one so much, that I will definitely be going back to read the first one, Midnight Crossroad (A Novel of Midnight, Texas).
If you like Charlaine Harris, then you will like this book. It is her trademark blend of humor, mystery and magic.

I have been conflicted about reading this series so I am glad to see your review on it. I was a big fan of the True Blood series until the last few books where for me the quality dropped and I also liked her Grave Sight series in which Manfred appeared, but I have hesitated to invest in this new series. Your review makes me want to give it a try. 😉
