    Growing Cat Grass

Growing cat grass for indoor cats

Since we made the decision to keep Luxie, our newest cat, as an indoor cat, I've been making sure that I play with her a lot and keep her amused.  We have regular play time, nap time, eating time, and we even have meditation time.  But when I was sitting outside the other day, watching Coco chew on some grass, I had a revelation.  I needed to get Luxie some kitty cat grass!  Maybe if I got her some of her very own grass, she would leave my spider plant alone and it might stand a chance of surviving.

Cat grass, not to be confused with catnip or cat mint, is basically grass you grow inside for your cats.  If you watch cats outside, they will frequently stop to chew on grass.  It's hard to find a consensus on why cats eat grass.  Some say it aides in their digestion, some say it just makes them vomit, however everyone agrees that it is harmless and may even keep them from nibbling on houseplants that are not good for them.  Whatever the case, Luxie loves her.  Every so often she'll jump up and run to it, like she just remembered it's there.

We have had cat grass in the past.  It wasn't labeled cat grass, it was actually wheat grass that we bought at the produce section of our natural foods store.  It turned out the cats loved it.  So, I went searching for some more wheat grass for Luxie.  I found Premium Wheatgrass/ Cat Grass Seeds/ Hard Red Wheat - what I liked about it was that it was organic and non GMO.  That meant that if I wanted to, I could also use the grass in my smoothies (well I'd grow my own private patch of it, not to share with Luxie).

Luxie loves her grass.  I've already started another pot, so that by the time she works her way through this one, I'll have another ready for her.

Almost forgot to add an artsy shot for Caturday Art!

Our indoor cat Lucy won't eat that grass- maybe I should try it again! Your Luxie is quite pretty!

Awww, so cute and yes they need their grass. Dogs do too. It settles their stomachs (for dogs it does).

Have a purrfect Feline Friday. โ˜บ

I gave up on cat grass because my cat your tear it apart and make a huge mess. Tried several times and the results was always the same.

I like to grow it for my cats as well, but haven't for a while. I actually just started another batch the other day and this morning they were sprouting already

Spider plants are the worst. My born-and-bred man cat would gnaw the heck out of mine, even when he had cat grass available! I finally had to hang it from the ceiling.

We love having cat grass but unfortunately, some cat around here (Wally!) likes to pull all the grass out of the dirt and make a big mess. He ruins it for all of us. ~Ernie

I've done this. My son's cats knock over the grass pot and play in the dirt on the floor. Silly cats.
