The Girl With the Lower Back Tattoo by Amy Schumer

The Girl with the Lower Back Tattoo
This review is for the audio version of The Girl with the Lower Back Tattoo by Amy Schumer.   I can count on one hand the number of books that I abandon, that I just can’t get through.  This one is one of them.

I was expecting something entertaining, not necessarily always funny, but interesting and amusing.  It was none of those things.  Not entertaining, not funny, not interesting and not amusing.

As I was listening, I kept trying to determine what she wanted to accomplish with the book.   At times she would share stories about how she was treated poorly and she would give advice to empower girls.  So, I would think, okay it’s a book to empower girls and women.  But then she would follow that up with a random listing of things she doesn’t like.  Totally unrelated and totally not interesting.  When “Big Bang Theory” was on that list (and she made a point to say the tv show not the universe theory) - I paused to think, why am I listening to this, why does she think I want to know that she doesn’t like a particular tv show.

Then she read from her diary when she was a teenager with a current commentary thrown in.  It’s pretty much how you imagine it would be.  I would never in a million years think that someone would be interested in hearing me read aloud my teenage diary.  I barely find it interesting and I lived it.

Maybe it got more interesting in the end, but if in the first half you are scraping for content by making a list of things you don’t like and reading aloud your teenage diary, I can’t imagine it getting any better.

I read this book despite not being a fan of hers. As much as I don't care for her crude humor, she does seem to be a nice person and takes good care of her family and friends.

I have to say, Amy Shumer makes me feel conflicted. Some of her comedy is spot-on, even if not in language I would normally use. But so much of what she does seems to be to get attention. It sounds like the book is a true representation of her. Thanks for the review, so I know I'm not missing anything.
