Derby Day Cocktails!
While the term Derby Day was first used to refer to a classic English horse race founded in 1780 by Lord Derby, it only means one thing for us here in the United States…the Kentucky Derby!
Also known as “The Run For The Roses”, it is an annual event held in Louisville, KY on the first Saturday in May and it has been held, uninterrupted, since 1875. Not too shabby!
Now the actual race just lasts about 2 minutes but the party celebrating the race lasts for about 2 weeks! So don your festive attire, including fancy hats (ladies!), and celebrate Derby Day this year with some recipes from Sidewalk Shoes!
Of course the historic Kentucky Derby cocktail is the classic Mint Julep, served in an ice-frosted silver julep cup. Now we didn’t have the silver cups here at Sidewalk Shoes, but we did manage to find a couple of larger rocks glasses for our Classic Mint Julep and they frosted-up just fine!
We also tried a fruity variation of the classic with our Blackberry Mint Julep and it was delicious!
While these are called Derby Day cocktails, they are great for sipping any day!
