A book review of The Guilty One by Sophie Littlefield. Post may contain affiliate links.
The Guilty One opens when Jeff, the husband of Maris, shows up to get some things out of the garage. But really he is there to just try and push Maris forward on the divorce. While he is there, Maris receives a phone call from Ron Isherwood. He is about to jump off of a bridge. He is feeling guilty and trying to do something to atone. To atone for the fact that his son, Karl, killed Maris’s daughter, Calla.
This is the story of how an event effects the lives of everyone around it. Maris and Jeff, the parent’s of the murdered girl, getting divorced. Maris, finding herself. Ron and Deb, the parent’s of Karl the accused murderer, at odds on what to do with their son.
We are given hints that some of the characters have secrets. We are taken along with Maris as she steps out of the mold that she has made for herself. What to become now that she is no longer a mother and about to no longer be a wife.
Not especially exciting, but it held my interest the whole way.
