When I chose to read The Uninvited: A Novel by Cat Winters - the title and the spooky cover led me to believe that this was going to be a scary atmospheric novel. It’s not really. Yes, Ivy Rowan does see dead people and they do forecast the upcoming death of someone, but they aren’t really handled in a scary way. They are more just a characteristic of Ivy, like - Ivy has red hair and she sees dead people.
The setting is October 1918. The flu is spreading rampant and it is not a good time to be a German in America. Ivy recovers from the flu only to learn that her father and brother have killed a German shop owner in retaliation for the death of her brother, Billy, who was fighting in the great war. Ivy flees her home, unable to handle the guilt of what her father and brother have done. She later stops by the German’s shop and meets his brother, to offer some sort of help. They develop a relationship. At this point, the most suspenseful part of the novel is whether or not she will get turned in for having a relationship with a German.
The story progresses somewhat slowly. Not scary, not suspenseful, but still good. Then about ¾ of the way through, we are completely thrown for a loop. I totally didn’t see it coming and even said, “Wow” out loud. Excellent twist.
Overall, a very good read. If it feels slow to you, keep going, it’s worth it.

"Ivy has red hair and she sees dead people." Very nonchalant. LOL
