    Creme de Violette

Have you ever heard of Creme de Violette?  I admit that I had never heard of it until I started making cocktails for this blog.  Creme de Violette is also known as Liqueur de Violette.  As you can probably guess it is a liqueur made out of violets.   According to Wikipedia, the Rothman & Winter Crème de Violette, that I buy is made from Queen Charlotte and March violet flowers from the Alps.

As you know, I am a big do it yourself person when it comes to liqueurs.  I was so excited when I learned about this liqueur because I have a yard full of violets.   Even though I found some websites showing how to do it, after much reading, I came to the sad conclusion that American violets don't work.  You need French violets.  Darn those French!

Creme de Violette runs around twenty-something a bottle, so it's not terribly expensive.  Believe me, we've paid more for a fancy bottles of liqueur.  It adds a lovely lavender color and soft floral note to your cocktails.

How to Make The Aviation Cocktail

The Aviation Cocktail is a simple 4 ingredient cocktail.  The hardest part is locating a bottle Creme de Violette, though with the craft cocktail explosion this is getting easier and easier.

To make the Aviation Cocktail: Fill a cocktail shaker with ice.  Add gin, Maraschino Liqueur, Creme de Violette, and lemon juice to the cocktail shaker. Shake and then strain into a cocktail glass.

The Aviation Cocktail is a classic, it was created before prohibition.  Like most classics it stands up to the test of time and is perfectly suited for today's cocktail drinkers!   Besides being elegant, gorgeous, and delicious, it is also easy!  The hardest part is locating the Creme de Violette.

I’ve been wanting to make this for years all because of these Violette square mints I love from world market . No place made the drink, except Chris Ruth’s supposedly.
They had all the ingredients for it at the local Bevmo. I also got Monin’s Violette syrup as well from Amazon (more of a purple red than the purple /blue of the liquor) because why not ? I changed the lemon to 1/2oz and the Creme de Violette to 1/2 as well. More sweet and a tad More violet flavors 👍

If only I could find my grandmother's cocktail book from the 1930's.
