Why I'm Starting a Capsule Wardrobe
Last summer on my now defunct Grey is the New Black Blog, I started my capsule wardrobe journey. Since some of you have been emailing me about how it began, I decide to reshare my first steps of How I Created My Capsule Wardrobe.
I started a Capsule Wardrobe because I was spending too much time staring at a closet full of clothes trying to decide what to wear. It was exhausting and frustrating. It was decision fatigue.
Capsule Wardrobe Step One
The very first step of building a capsule wardrobe is to purge your closet. You've probably read The Life Changing Magic of Tidying Up. This book like a lot of other websites tells you to do your closet all at once. Dump everything out, take water breaks, make your piles. That wasn't going to work for me. I knew that somewhere in the middle of it, I would be soooo over it.
So, I did it in 30 minute a day sessions. I just started at one end of my closet and worked my around. Some things I needed to try on and some things were just obviously a no. The secret is to keep the things you love. Get rid of the "I might wear these someday" or "I got this on such a good sale" items.
After the Closet Purge
At the end of my closet purge, I had 6 big black trashbags of clothes to donate! I debated whether or not to try and sell them, but honestly, I just wanted them out. Feel free to sell if you want, but take those clothes to another room, get them away from your closet!
Looking at the clothes left in my closet, felt amazing. I felt lighter. There was space between my clothes! I'm not going to tell you how many times, I walked back into my closet just to admire the open space.
Next week I will go over my Step 2 for Building Your Capsule Wardrobe.

Isn’t it amazing how less makes you feel like you have more? I love Marie Kondo and learned so much from her.

I agree going through your whole closet at once can be overwhelming! Dividing it into manageable time increments is much easier!

Great tips to purge a closet. I didn't always used to have a small wardrobe but since I learned that having too much clothes can be frustrating. I don't buy a lot anymore and just reuse what I have. Love your outfit here such a casual chic look!

Thanks so much, Pam. I actually have a bag hanging on the doorknob of my closet, but I find every excuse in the world to avoid the purge! My excuse for keeping things is the possibility of an item fitting better when I lose weight. Ha!
I'm definitely going to get on it. With this oppressive heat and humidity, I need a pick-me-up!
