A review of Cardeal Colheita Seleccionada 2014 for Weekend Wine Reviews #340.
Cardeal Colheita Seleccionada 2014
Caves Velhas, Cardeal Colheita Seleccionada, 2014 Dão Doc, Rio Maior, Portugal, Wine Awesomeness. They say: The Däo region is one of Portugal's most serious wine regions. It is located on the central mountains, so there are no salty breezes. One of it's most important contributions is that it is the origin of the Touriga Nacional vine that is the main ingredient in port! It's also in this wine. On the nose: Freshly steeped black tea, damp plum trees and earthy spices like nutmeg and star anise. On the palate: sensual, bold and plush with overly ripe sun roasted blackberries, cold pressed currants and fresh-cut violets. Perfect for lovers of lush full-bodied California Cabernets, but at a third of their price.
We say: One of the things I love about Wine Awesomeness is that there is usually a theme around their wine shipment. This shipment contained all wines from Portugal and all of them made with grapes that I had never heard of before. This wine is made up of 35% Tinta-Roriz, 35% Alfrocheiro, and 30% Touriga-Nacional. I had never heard of any of those grapes before! We loved this wine. It had rich dark fruits, luscious mouth feel. Excellent!
We've also reviewed Adega Da Vila, Alentejo another lovely wine from Portugal.
