    Hydrangeas Are Poisonous to Cats

    Hydrangeas are Poisonous to Cats

A couple of years ago I made one New Year's Resolution.  That resolution was to always have fresh flowers on my dining room table.  That was probably the only year that I've actually kept a resolution for the whole year.

I went back to my old boring resolutions ...  you know ... eating healthy, exercising ... blah, blah, blah.  However, I do keep the whole flower thing in the back of my mind.  Seeing fresh flowers on the table makes me happy.  It also makes the kitty cats happy.

    Calico cat and hydrangea flowers

They like to come up and smell the flowers.  My cats are very good about not eating or bothering the flowers, however, after I bought these, I learned that hydrangeas are poisonous to cats!  It contains cyanogenic glycoside, which is poisonous to cats.  They aren't  as deadly as lilies, but they can cause vomiting and diarrhea.

So after these photos were taken, they hydrangeas were moved to a location where the kitties couldn't get them.  I always recommend that before bringing any flowers or plants into your home, to do the research and see if they might harm your kitties.

For her artsy photo, I used the Topaz Labs Plugin.

I gotta say that i did not know this. However, my cats to do not go up on tables. They never bother any plants or flowers I have in my house. I guess that is a good thing.

I love fresh flowers too, but I know Arya would destroy them. She's a destroyer. lol I do always check any plants or flowers if and when we bring them in the house, which is rare.

That artsy shot belongs in a frame on the wall. That is ART!

Thanks for the info on Hydrangeas - we knew about lilies... Glad your kitties don't chew on the flowers. I won't bring hydrangeas in! Will stick to bringing roses inside as the kitties like to smell them and they aren't poisonous... Love the art photo - she is so beautiful.

We have good news - got four cats caught from a dangerous motel setting - have one more to go. The four caught won't go back. the fifth one has a caregiver because he only shows up once in a while, just needs neutered so he will stop roaming. Please purr fur the new kitties at my house. They are related to another kitty I caught over a year ago named Chiquita.,

Scary! My cats aren't as good about leaving flowers alone. I can't even have fake ones in the house without them getting chewed on. Thanks for this informative post!

I agree. I always did that when I had kitties. You have to protect them.

Coco is such a beautiful kitty.

I too love fresh flowers. They make most everyone smile.

Have a purrfect Feline Friday, Coco. My best to your mom. ♥

You know, for as much as people have told us using fake silk flowers is so "grandmotherly," we just can't get rid of the few we have exactly for this reason. Our cats will eat anything we bring in from outside. Thanks for this important post!

Mommy is very proud of us as we don't nibble on Mommy's plants. We didn't know that about hydrangeas. We have some outside.

I didn’t know hydrangeas are poisonous to kitties. They look so pretty in that vase. Coco is even prettier!

I love fresh flowers too. But my cats will not keep away so I can't have them very often. They love the smell and then chew. Coco is so pretty!

Cats or hydrangeas. I chose the hydrangeas! Seriously though, a garden audit is essential when you have children and pets.

Miss Pam, Mom luvs hydrangeas and flowers like you do. She would love to have fresh flowers in the house daily, but she knows that I would try to eat all of them. I just can't resist, so Mom has to do plenty of research to make sure whatever she brings in won't be harmful. Needless to say, she doesn't bring too many plants and flowers inside. Coco is so-o pretty posing with the fluffy, white blossoms. Do those flowers have a good smell?

How strange it is in life that some of the most beautiful are also the most dangerous. On happier note, they are both delightful together and her fur is sublime.

It seems so many flowers are poisonous to cats that I just don't allow any in the house now just to be on the safe side.

      Love the picture!

Oh, oh! I’ll remember that. Good you moved the hydrangeas. They are beautiful, though, as are the pictures with kitty sniffing them.

I didn't know hydrangeas are poisonous to cats. Eric and Flynn were never interested in flowers, but I always kept them out of reach, just in case. That is a lovely art effect.

We know some plants and flowers are poisonous to cats but we weren't aware of these. Jan doesn't keep any fresh flowers around any more since she can't remember which are safe and we pull the flowers out of the vase anyway.
