    Leggett Point Overlook Trail

LAST UPDATED: September 23, 2024 PUBLISHED: November 17, 2020 By Tim Greer Leave a Comment As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

The Leggett Point Overlook is an easy hike with a beautiful vista and just one of the many that can be found in the Chattanooga area!

Mountains in the distance with blue sky and pine trees.

After our hike on Big Soddy Creek Gulf last week, we decided to venture a little further north to Sale Creek and hike the Leggett Point Trail.

This small trail is a part of the Rock Creek Segment of the Cumberland Trail State Park.

It is a short drive north on Highway 27 to Sale Creek where you turn left onto Leggett Road.  As you start up the mountain you will pass the Rock Creek Trailhead on the left, the lower access point to the Rock Creek trails.

Continue up the mountain and watch closely for the Leggett Road Trailhead parking on the left, just a small area along the road.

A few yards down the path to the left of the parking area, you will find the trail start and a posting with a good map of the Rock Creek Trails and the Cumberland Trail segment.

Path in the woods covered with pine needles.

The trail at this point is wide, smooth and very easy to walk. The hike to the Leggett Point Overlook is approximately 0.5 miles.

Sign pointing to Leggett Point Overlook.

You will soon see a cluster of signs, at a trail intersection, indicating directions for Leggett Point Overlook, the Rock Creek Loop, the Rock Creek Overlook and the Cumberland Trail.  Continue down this same wide trail, as indicated by the sign, for the  Leggett Point Overlook.

The trail will bring you to another trail intersection, from the right, with a sign for the Leggett Point Overlook.  Take the trail to the right to continue to the point.  The trail is more narrow and a bit rough but the descent to the point isn’t bad at all.

View of mountains with fall colored trees.

When you arrive at the overlook you will be rewarded with a beautiful view! There are some large rocks to navigate to get to the best view but nothing serious.

Sun beam on tree covered mountains.

This will be obvious, but If you have youngsters with you, keep them close!  There are many rock ledges and it is a wide open, natural site!

You've barely done any work, but it's a good time to sit back and enjoy the view!

    Rhododendrons on a path.

The hike back to the trailhead isn’t too steep but you will notice the elevation change on the return to the Upper Rock Creek Trail intersection.

There are many clusters of rhododendrons on the trail. I can just imagine what it's like in the spring when they are blooming. We will definitely go back and I'll update with some new photos.

    Bright red fall leaves.

We hiked in the fall and the colors were beautiful! Southeast Tennessee can put on a gorgeous show in the fall!

We didn't venture any further on this hike but we do plan to check out the Rock Creek Overlook in the near future.  We highly recommend a visit to Leggett Point Overlook!
