Looking for a fruity add to your margaritas? This Watermelon Infused Tequila is perfect!
I didn’t grow up in a typical American family. Though as I write that sentence, I wonder what really is the typical American family. Growing up in the 1960’s, I judged the typical family as any one that was not mine. All of my friends had two parents. They went on family vacations. They had barbecues and pool parties. I spent the first 10 years of my life living occasionally with my mom, occasionally with other relatives, and even occasionally with people I didn’t know. When I was in fourth grade, I went to live with my grandmother, and while she was not your typical grandmother at all, it was as close to normal as I was going to get. It allowed me to make friends, and for better or worse, see how typical families lived. Better because I was able to make friends and be a part of their lives and worse because I envied them so much.
I know you are wondering what in the world this could have to do with watermelon infused tequila! It was during that time, that I discovered my absolute love for watermelon. One of my friends on my street had a barbecue and her parents invited me over. They had steak and watermelon! I’m sure they had other things too, but for me it was all about the steak and watermelon. I thought I had died and gone to heaven. It was my first taste of steak and I thought it was the most wonderful thing on earth. It might have been my first taste of watermelon, though I probably had it before, but never in such abundance. I could eat as much I wanted!
From that day forward, steak and watermelon were it for me. They were the stuff of dreams. While steak was for all practical purposes out of my reach, though my grandmother would occasionally buy me one for my birthday, watermelon was much easier to get. She would buy a whole watermelon, and I would have it eaten in two days. With no one home to chastise me, I had it for breakfast, lunch and dinner. My love affair with watermelon and steak continue to this day. If I was on death row and I had to choose my ubiquitous last meal – it would include steak and watermelon.
That love has led me to watermelon infused tequila. Genius. So easy. Time does all the work. The tequila takes on a lovely hint of watermelon, in just a matter of days. It’s so easy, it’s barely a recipe. I made three cups, but you can really make as much or as little as you’d like. All you need is tequila and watermelon!
