Annuals from Proven Winners for Spring 2018

It's that time of the year again!  When I get to share with you my latest shipment of Proven Winners plants for this spring!  I'm doing it a little differently this year, with collages instead of individual photos.  I'll save individual photos for later posts as we follow these plants through the growing season.

This first collage features:  Angelface Steel Blue Angelonia Angustifolia - this is new this year and will be available next year for retail.  It blooms all summer without deadheading!   I was excited to see two of my favorite petunias - Supertunias!  There is Paradise and Bubblegum.  They are both pink petunias and I look forward to comparing the two as they grow!   Next up is Rockin' Fuchsia Salvia - a new salvia, the first of it's kind to bear bright fuchsia blooms!   Since we have a shady backyard, I was thrilled to see Colorblaze Torchlight a new coleus!

This easy fried rice is a great way to use leftover rice and pork.  However, if you are like me and you love it so much, buy some boneless pork chops and cook up a batch of rice and you are good to go!

I found this recipe in  Some Like It Hot: Spicy Favorites From The World's Hot Zones by Clifford A. Wright.  While I do it like it hot, I apparently don't like it as hot as some because this recipe called for ½ cup of thinly sliced red chiles!  I can't even begin to imagine that heat!  I mean seriously, I would probably require an ambulance if I used that much!

     Whole Grain Version of Laarb!

I love laarb.  Laarb is a Northern Thai dish that is ground meat cooked with various Thai chiles, herbs and spices.  Anytime I find a variation of Laarb, I make it.  Like these Thai Beef Cabbage Wraps from Nigella.   So when I saw this whole grain version in The Great Big Pressure Cooker Book, I immediately added it to my menu.  I was intrigued.  I have been trying to add whole grains to our diet, and adding it to one of my favorite dishes could either go horribly wrong or be utter genius.  I am pleased to say that it was the later!

Whole grains in an Instant Pot.

In our efforts to eat healthier and following a more Mediterranean diet, we have been trying to add whole grains to our diet every day.  The problem is that whole grains usually take at least an hour to cook.  That's an hour that I have to keep an eye on the stove.

The Instant Pot has made this so easy!   While I've found that it doesn't save a huge amount of time, what it does save is my attention.

I can get the Instant Pot going and go outside and work in the garden.  I don't have to worry about it at all, not like a pot sitting on my gas stove.

Chicken, Cucumbers and Sweet Peppers Salad

On grocery shopping days, I usually buy a rotisserie chicken for dinner.  This started because in the summer I grocery shop on Fridays and Earthfare has rotisserie chickens on sale on Fridays.  It was pretty much a no-brainer.

The tradition continues and now no matter what day of the week I grocery shop on, I usually come home with a rotisserie chicken.   Then I usually take the easy way out and just cut up the chicken and give it a quick broil to crisp back up the skin and serve it with some chips.

    2016 Underwood Rosé

A review of 2016 Underwood Rosé for Weekend Wine Reviews.

    2016 Underwood Rosé

    2016 Underwood Rosé

2016 Underwood Rosé, Oregon, Wine Awesomeness.  This Rosé is made up Pinot Gris, Pinot Noir, Riesling, Muscat, and Chardonnay.  This wine is from Union Wine Company, you can also find it in a can.  The grapes used to make this Rosé came from four vineyards in three different wine  regions in Oregon.

"Summer Water" is a term used for an easy drinking summer Rosé.  This wine fits that bill perfectly.  It has captured the essence of summertime.  On the nose:  clean with a slight touch of brine, sea salt-crusted ultra juicy peaches and cantaloupe.  Notes of cantaloupe, honey and white flowers.  On the palate:  juicy red fruit notes of strawberry, cranberry, and raspberry.  It is crisp with a medium acidity.

The back of a bottle of 2016 Underwood Rosé

We really enjoyed this wine, as we do most wines that we get from Wine Awesomeness.    If you'd like to learn more about Union Wine Company - visit their website - Union Wine Company.

Some other Rosés that I have reviewed:  2016 Upwell Rosé, 2017 Lekker Rosé, and 2016 Secret Identity Rosé.
