    Thai Peanut Noodles

    Thai Peanut Noodles

    Feb 16, 2020 · 18 Comments

    Bowl of Peanut Noodles

Spicy, creamy and so delicious these Thai Peanut Noodles are a family favorite!  Perfect as an Asian side dish or an easy light lunch or dinner!  Once you try these, you'll be craving them like we do!

Blue bowl filled with creamy peanut noodles.

    Asian Side Dishes

Lately I've been making a lot of foods with Asian flavors, like these Honey Sriracha Pork Chops.

When I made the pork chops, I served them with Asian Slaw, which is my usual go to side dish.

I was working on a menu using Salt and Pepper Shrimp (coming soon!) and I wanted a more substantial side dish.  Since shrimp and pasta are a match made in heaven, it was a no brainer.

There are many variations of peanut noodles, some spicy, some not so much.  This is the version that I make the most often.  It's creamy, easy and so delicious!

Dark purple cocktail in a glass filled with crushed ice and garnished with blackberries and mint.

    Mint Julep Variation

A couple of days ago, I made a Classic Mint Julep Cocktail.  I had been thinking about Derby Day cocktails and wanted to start getting ready (what can I say, I'm a planner!)

It was so good.   As I was sipping it, I was thinking about how could I change it up.  What kind of variations could I try.

I had just bought a few containers of blackberries on sale and thought that they would go perfectly with the bourbon and the mint.

Oh boy, did they!  With just one extra step, you can turn your julep into a delicious fruity cocktail!

    Honey Sriracha Pork Chops

    Feb 9, 2020 · 27 Comments

    Seared and glazed pork chops.

Spicy, sweet and sticky pork chops in only 20 minutes!  With only 6 ingredients and one pan, these honey sriracha pork chops need to be on your must-make list!

Glazed pork chops on a white plate.

    Sweet and Spicy Pork Chops

After blogging for almost 12 years, I have lots of old posts.  Like this one.  It was originally a Donna Hay recipe called Honey and Soy Cutlets with Asian Slaw, published in 2011.  The funny part is that I didn't even like the pork chops, but I thought the slaw was good!

No sense in remaking pork chops that I didn't like, so I made up some that I did like.  The original recipe called for honey and a lot of soy sauce.  Since I was reusing the blog post url, I needed to keep some of the ingredients the same.

Honey and soy sauce sounded good, but what sounded even better was adding some sriracha sauce for some heat and a little sesame oil for even more depth of flavor.

So, without further ado, I bring you these amazing pork chops!  If you're looking for the Asian Slaw, it's now it's own recipe post.

    Quilting with Coco

Calico cat in a bright green basket.

How's your weather?  Ours has been rainy and gloomy for days.  Today it finally stopped raining, but it's not even going to get out of the 30's!

Needless to say, Coco is not amused.

She has decided that since she must stay inside, it's probably a good idea to help me with my quilting and sewing.  First she needs to make sure that my basket of patterns is nicely organized.

    White Negroni Cocktail

    Feb 6, 2020 · 5 Comments

    Bright yellow cocktail.

Like a classic negroni, this white negroni has only 3 ingredients!  If you love easy 3 ingredient cocktails, you are going to love this one!  With gin, floral Lillet Blanc and the refreshingly bitter Suze.

Two glasses of a bright yellow cocktail with a pitcher behind them.

    Negroni Variations

I don't know about you, but the old memory is not what it used to be.  That's why I love simple cocktails like a negroni.  Not only is it only 3 ingredients, but it's 3 equal parts of those ingredients (though some play around with that.)

It's easy to remember.  1 part gin, 1 part Campari and 1 part Vermouth.

It's also easy to play around with, like a Negroni Sbagliato, where you substitute a sparkling wine for the gin!   You can also just add another ingredient, for this Tart Cherry Negroni, I just added an equal part tart cherry juice - so yummy!

Not surprisingly, I was very intrigued when I heard of a White Negroni!  It turns a negroni on it's head with Lillet Blanc and Suze stepping in for the Campari and the Vermouth!

Just look at that gorgeous color - and it tastes as amazing as it looks!

Suze, Lillet Blanc, Plymouth gin and a lemon to make a White Negroni.

    Ingredients for a white negroni.

    • Suze -  is a bitter French aperitif .   It is made from gentian root.   When you start making a lot of cocktails, you'll find that you also start collecting different bitter liqueurs and aperitifs, like Campari and Fernet Branca.   For more info on Suze, here is an interesting article from Bon Appétite - What is Suze?
    • Lillet Blanc - A floral, fruity aperitif wine.
    • Gin - for this we used a Plymouth Gin - which gives it more floral and cucumber notes.
    • Lemon - twist for garnish.  Try to buy organic since you'll be dropping the lemon peel into your drink.  Squeeze the juice and either store it in the fridge or freezer for your next cocktail using lemon juice - perhaps a New York Whiskey Sour?

Plymouth Gin and Lillet Blanc poured out into shot glasses.

    Directions

This negroni is built in glass - meaning that the ingredients are added to the glass and then stirred - no need for a cocktail shaker!   Some versions of the recipe have you shake it in a cocktail shaker with ice and then strain it into a coupe glass.

I like my negroni's over ice, so I went with the built in glass method, you can use whichever one you prefer.

You'll need 1 ½ ounces of gin and 1 ½ ounces of Lillet Blanc.

Suze in a shot glass and bright yellow cocktail being stirred.

With only ½ ounce of Suze, this recipe veers a little off the classic equal parts.  We'll have to try and share some other Suze cocktails and let you decide what you think about it, we love it!

Add ice to a rock's glass and pour in the gin, Lillet Blanc and Suze.  Stir for about 30 seconds to properly chill and dilute the cocktail.

    Garnish with a lemon twist.

Two cocktail glasses with a bright yellow cocktail.

This was so good!  If you'll notice the photos, you'll see two different glasses, that's because we had it twice in one week!  Easy 3 ingredient, build in glass cocktails for the win!

I'll be filling out my cocktail recipes with some Suze Cocktails and some Lillet Blanc Cocktails so you can make use of those bottles that you bought!

    More tempting gin cocktails.

You'll find several gin cocktails in this collection of Pretty Pink Cocktails.

Spice up your cocktails with this Spicy Verde Gin Gimlet.

Another favorite 3 ingredient cocktail is the Bees Knees.

    Fun Sparkling French 75 Cocktail

    Feb 3, 2020 · 15 Comments

Two sparkling cocktails with a popped champagne cork.

The French 75 Cocktail is an easy light classic cocktail!  A champagne cocktail that is perfect for celebrations or any time you want a fun sparkling cocktail.

Two glasses filled with a light yellow cocktail and a champagne cork in front of them.

    Champagne Cocktails

I love champagne.  I love it's crisp, bright flavor.  It's fun bubbles.  But even more than champagne, I love champagne cocktails.

Last year for New Year's Eve, instead of drinking plain champagne we had Grapefruit Mimosas, and we loved them.  So, this year, we tried a French 75 and love it too!

An alternative to champagne is Prosecco an Italian sparkling wine.  I tend to use them interchangeably, but I'm sure some cocktail purists would not agree with me!

Gin, champagne, lemon and simple syrup.

Ingredients in a French 75 Cocktail

    • Gin - We used a London Dry Gin.
    • Champagne - pick your favorite.
    • Lemon juice - fresh squeezed.  Preferably organic because you'll be using a twist of the peel for garnish.
    • Simple syrup - equal parts water and sugar heated until the sugar dissolves.  Will keep in the fridge for about a month.

Photo collage showing gin and lemon juice in a cocktail shaker.

How to Make this Sparkling Cocktail

Pour 1 ounce of gin into a cocktail shaker.

Add ½ ounce of fresh lemon juice to the shaker.

Photo collage showing simple syrup being added to cocktail shaker and cocktail in glass.

Add ½ ounce of simple syrup to the cocktail shaker.

Add ice to cocktail shaker and shake for 30 seconds, then strain into cocktail glass.  A tall flute glass is recommended so you can see the bubbles!

Collage showing champagne being added to French 75 cocktail and finished cocktail.

Top with champagne and garnish with a lemon twist!

The French 75 cocktail was created in 1915 at the New York Bar in Paris, by Harry MacElhone.  The bar was later renamed Harry's New York Bar.  The name of the cocktail comes from the idea that it has such a kick to it that it felt like being shelled by a French 75mm field gun!

Two cocktail glasses filled with a light yellow cocktail and popped champagne cork in front.

Yes, it's potent, but it goes down so easy!  It's also so easy to make!   It's one of our favorite cocktails.

It's great for New Year's Eve, Mother's Day, Valentine's Day, brunch or any time you want a sparkling cocktail.

    French 75 Cocktail Variations

The two most common variations of the French 75 Cocktail are the French 76 Cocktail and the French 77 Cocktail.

The French 76 Cocktail replace the gin in the French 75 with vodka.  It lets the flavor from the sparkling wine shine through a bit more.

The French 77 Cocktail uses elderflower liqueur in place of the gin.  This is my favorite variation, softly floral, really elegant.

    20 Minute Mexican Steak Salad

    Feb 2, 2020 · 22 Comments

Mexican Steak Salad in a green bowl.

This easy Steak Salad gets a Mexican flare with tomatoes, avocados, chipotle peppers, and lime!  Use leftover grilled steak to make it even easier!  Full of flavor and a great way to stretch a small amount of meat!

Green bowl with steak salad with avocados, tomatoes and crumbly cheese on top.

    Mexican Steak Salad

I first made this steak salad back in 2013.  We had it for New Year's Eve night.  I had just gotten the Mexican Everyday Cookbook from Rick Bayless and wanted a quick and easy recipe to try.

I wanted something that I could get all the ingredients from the grocery store near me and not have to go to the Mexican market.  A trip to the Mexican market planned for later because I had bookmarked a bunch of recipes to try, but needed something with easy to find ingredients for New Year's.

We've since had this salad too many times to count, but I finally got around to retaking the photos.  Anytime I grill a steak, I always make an extra one and we have this salad the next day.  I love that I can stretch one steak between two salads.

    Missing Feral Kitty Winston

    Light gray tabby cat.

I was going to use some new photos for today's post, but I brought down the wrong memory card.  I have my Canon camera all set up to take food photos, so I set up my Fuji to use for all other photography.

I grabbed the memory card out of my Canon and instead of kitty cats, uploaded a Blueberry Margarita and some Sriracha Honey Pork Chops (all coming soon!)

So, I went looking through my cat folder of photos that still needed to be edited (I'm down to only about 700!)   I found these photos of Winston from 2016.

In that post, I talk about finding a new liqueur (well, new to us) called Ancho Reyes Verde - a poblano chile liqueur.   One sip and we completely fell in love with this liqueur!

It turned our gimlet into a flavorful and spicy treat.

We knew it would be amazing in a margarita, and it was.    Spicy, tangy, with a slight herbacious feel to it.  So good!

    Tarragon Chicken Salad Veronique

    Bowl of chicken salad.

This Tarragon Chicken Salad Veronique is everything you could want in a chicken salad.  The fresh anise flavor of the tarragon, the sweet grapes, the tender chunks of chicken.  Serve with some toasted bread and you have a lovely lunch or a light dinner!

Two bowls of chicken salad with a vase of bright pink zinnias.

    Tarragon Chicken Salad

Mr. Sidewalk Shoes and I met and married in St. Louis.  Our first house was down in South St. Louis, in an area known as Benton Park.  It was a lovely brick two + story row house, built I believe in 1896.

It was a great eclectic neighborhood, but what I really loved was Sydney Street Cafe just a block or so over from us.  And, what I really, really loved about Sydney Street Cafe was their tarragon chicken salad.

This was before The Food Network and Food Blogs and I had never tasted tarragon before.  Never knew such a thing existed.  I immediately fell in love with it, and since I am quite a simple creature really, now and forever tarragon is associated with chicken salad.  I'm easy that way.

    Spicy Verde Gin Gimlet

Yellow cocktail garnished with a lime wheel.

This Spicy Ancho Verde Gimlet is so delicious!  A little bit spicy with a hint of chili pepper.   Ancho Reyes Verde, Hendricks gin, lime juice and simple syrup!    Tastes just like a fancy craft cocktail from a restaurant, but you can make it easily at home!

Two yellow cocktails garnished with a lime peel.

    Ancho Reyes Chile Liqueur

I don't know what you like to do on a Saturday night, but before we go out to eat, we peruse the local liquor store.  Imbibe Chattanooga offers wine tasting from 4-6, which is perfect for us, and after tasting some wine, we wander the store looking for interesting liquors or liqueurs.

Which is how we stumbled upon Ancho Reyes Chile Liqueurs.   They have two varieties, an ancho chile liqueur and a chile poblano liqueur.

Oh my people, these are so good.   A little spicy, with good chile pepper flavor.  They really elevate any cocktail that you use them in.  I saw the recipe for a Verde Gimlet on their site, and just had to try it.

Instant Pot Sausage, Potatoes and Cabbage

Bowl of sausage, potatoes and cabbage.

This Instant Pot Sausage, Potatoes and Cabbage is pure comfort food!  Ready in about 30 minutes and so delicious!  Creamy potatoes, buttery cabbage and perfectly cooked kielbasa sausage makes the best weeknight meal.

No fancy ingredients here, just home cooked food that's easy, wholesome and so tasty!

Brown bowl filled with sausage, cabbage, and potatoes.

    Sausage, Cabbage and Potatoes

Growing up, my grandmother would often make sausage, cabbage and potatoes in her big cast iron skillet.  Whenever I saw that vacuum wrapped package of sausage in the fridge, I would get so excited, because it was one of my favorite meals.

It was tricky though, sometimes the sausage would be over cooked, sometimes the potatoes would fall apart and sometimes the cabbage seemed to dissolve all the way.

Didn't matter, I loved it no matter how it was cooked.

A few weeks ago, I got to thinking about trying it in the Instant Pot.  OMG.  It came out perfect!  Look at that photo - the potatoes are holding their shape, while still being fluffy and tender, the cabbage is buttery but not turned to mush and the sausage is perfect!

    What is a Frittata?

If you don't know what a frittata is, then let me introduce you to your new best friend!  It's sort of an Italian omelet, kind of like a crustless quiche.

Unlike an omelet the ingredients are mixed in with the eggs instead of used as a filling.  They are typically made in an oven safe skillet because they are started on the stove and finished in the oven.

Every single time I make one, I think, "Why don't we have these more often?"  They are so simple and perfect.

Now that eggs are no longer bad for you (don't you love science and all it's research?) - I am ready to add more egg recipes to our menus!

Calico cat looking off to the side.

I think I've mentioned our neighbor's cat, Tiki, before.  Tiki is a huge bully.  She absolutely terrorizes our cats.  I can't let Patchouli out in the yard unless I am there to watch over her.  Even Coco has to constantly keep an eye out for her.

Gray cat hiding behind some plants.

Not only does she terrorize the cats, she gets on our back porch and sprays our grill cover.  She goes on the front porch and sprays our front door and shreds our welcome mat!

Gray cat on a garden path.

I keep a Super Soaker Water gun by the basement door and I use it to chase her off.  She is not the least bit afraid of me if I don't have that big water gun!

Even when I'm shooting her with water, she'll pause at the end of our yard and spray one of our bushes before dashing away!

    2 Ingredient! Cape Cod Cocktail

    Jan 16, 2020 · 9 Comments

Two cocktail glasses with a deep red cocktail.

Whether you call this a Cape Cod Cocktail, Cape Codder Cocktail, or Vodka Cranberry, you will definitely call it delicious!  This easy two or three ingredient vodka cocktail should be on everyone's easy cocktail list!

    Cape Cod Cocktail

I was trying to come up with some pretty pink cocktails for Valentine's Day and Mother's Day - even though I enjoy a pretty cocktail any time of the year.  I was using my raspberry vodka, which turns every cocktail into a pretty cocktail.

I came across the Cape Cod Drink, also called The Cape Codder Cocktail and also called a Vodka Cranberry.  Two ingredients - vodka and cranberry juice.   It doesn't get much easier than that!

A bottle of cranberry juice was sitting in the fridge from making a Double Cranberry Cosmopolitan, so I was all set.

    Fruity and Delicious Raspberry Cosmopolitan

    Jan 13, 2020 · 6 Comments

Two martini glasses filled with a raspberry cosmo.

This Raspberry Cosmopolitan is so fruity and delicious!  A pretty pink cocktail that bursting with raspberry flavor!  Perfect for Valentine's Day, but you'll want to sip it all year long!

    Raspberry Vodka Drinks

While contemplating what cocktail recipe to make next, I realized something.  I am really good about sharing a recipe for an infusion or liqueur, but I'm not so good about giving you cocktail recipes to use them in!

For example my homemade raspberry vodka.   This infused vodka is amazing, taste just like fresh raspberries!

Amazing, fruity and delicious and I hadn't given you a single recipe to use it!

I've decided to right that wrong and start working on some cocktail recipes that use my homemade infused liquors and liqueurs!

With Valentine's Day coming up (though I think pretty pink cocktails should be drank all year long) a pretty pink cocktail using raspberry vodka sounded like just the thing!

    30 Minute Lobster Fra Diavolo

    Jan 12, 2020 · 22 Comments

    Bowl of lobster pasta.

Lobster Fra Diavolo is a simple and elegant lobster pasta recipe.  It feels like a special occasion pasta, but it's easy enough for whenever you feel like it.  It's the perfect way to stretch a small amount of lobster.

    Using Lobster Tails

I remember when lobster used to be the big treat on a restaurants menu.  You had two fancy choices, steak or lobster.  There was no quinoa crusted salmon over a lentil avocado salad or grilled radicchio topped with a maple bourbon bacon fried trout.

There was steak and lobster and if it was a fancy Italian place you could also get veal Parmesan.  So, yeah, times have changed.  I can't remember the last time I ordered lobster in a restaurant.

However, lobster still feels fancy to me, perhaps because I will probably never cook a live lobster in my kitchen.  I will however, buy those tiny already cooked lobster tails when they are on sale.
